What is an ice luge and how does it work at an event

At bars, parties and brand activations there is one moment that always draws a crowd: someone pours a drink into the top of an ice sculpture and, seconds later, it comes out ice-cold at the other end, straight into the glass. That is an ice luge.

What exactly is an ice luge

A luge is an ice block or sculpture with a carved channel inside. The channel slopes down, sometimes zig-zagging, from where the drink is poured to the outlet. On the way, the drink chills against the ice — without being diluted as it would be with cubes in the glass.

How it works at the event

  1. The piece is set up on a stable base with drainage for meltwater.
  2. The bartender or guest pours the drink into the top opening.
  3. The drink runs down the channel and comes out chilled at the bottom — into a glass or, shot-style, straight into the mouth.

Lighting in the base makes the clear ice glow and turns the luge into the centrepiece of the party.

Which drinks work best

  • Spirits and shots — vodka, gin, tequila, liqueurs: the classic format.
  • Cocktails — pre-mixed, without fruit pieces that could block the channel.
  • Sparkling wine — works, but loses some fizz on the way.
  • Non-alcoholic drinks — juices and lemonades for family or corporate events.

Luge formats

Interactive block: a clear block with a channel, where we can freeze bottles, flowers or the brand’s product. Dispenser sculpture: a figure that serves the drink — like our ice monkey with a tube hidden in the banana. Luge with logo: the channel combined with the brand identity, perfect for launches.

What about hygiene?

A luge must be made from food-grade ice produced with treated water and handled like any other ice that touches drinks. At Iceology we use the same crystal-clear ice we supply to bars and restaurants.

Tips for your event

  • Order at least 10 days in advance.
  • Decide who will serve: a bartender dedicated to the luge controls the pace and responsible drinking.
  • Choose the spot carefully — away from direct sun and heat sources.
  • Outdoors, go for larger pieces and late-afternoon timings.
