The cause is dry ice \u2014 and before using it in a bar or at a party, it is worth knowing exactly what it is and what the risks are.<\/p>\n<h2>What dry ice is<\/h2>\n<p>Dry ice is not water ice: it is carbon dioxide (CO\u2082) in solid form, at about \u221278.5 \u00b0C. It does not melt \u2014 it turns straight from solid to gas (sublimation). The \u201csmoke\u201d you see is cold CO\u2082 condensing the moisture in the air.<\/p>\n<h2>The main risks<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Cold burns.<\/strong> Touching dry ice without gloves can injure the skin within seconds.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Swallowing.<\/strong> This is the most serious risk. A swallowed piece of dry ice keeps releasing gas and can cause burns and serious internal injuries. Never drink a cocktail that still has solid dry ice in the glass.<\/li>\n<li><strong>CO\u2082 build-up.<\/strong> In enclosed, poorly ventilated spaces, large amounts of dry ice can raise the CO\u2082 concentration in the air.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Pressure.<\/strong> Kept in an airtight container, the trapped gas can make the container burst.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Basic rules if you decide to use it<\/h2>\n<ol>\n<li>Always handle it with gloves and tongs, never with bare hands.<\/li>\n<li>Prefer to use dry ice <em>outside<\/em> the drink: in a separate container, under the glass or on a decorative plate.<\/li>\n<li>If it goes in the glass, the guest may only drink once the dry ice has completely disappeared \u2014 and must be told so.<\/li>\n<li>Ensure good ventilation and do not store it in airtight containers.<\/li>\n<li>Keep it away from children.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h2>Safe alternatives for a memorable cocktail<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li><strong>Large-format clear ice<\/strong> \u2014 a clear sphere or large cube gives the same premium effect with no risk.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Smoking gun<\/strong> \u2014 creates aromatic smoke (wood, spices) inside a covered glass.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Logo ice<\/strong> \u2014 the signature cocktail with the brand inside the cube.<\/li>\n<li><strong>Ice luge<\/strong> \u2014 the show happens as the drink is served, running down through the ice.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Where to buy dry ice?<\/h2>\n<p>To be transparent: Iceology <strong>does not produce or sell dry ice<\/strong>.
